CONCRETE PAVEMENTS
Concretes are the best for road construction especially for pavements since they are rigid in nature and have high tensile strength. The concrete has various characteristics according to the required pavement structure and it can be modified and changed.
Also, concrete is used for several other road constructions like grade one and two highways that withstand diesel spillage and other aggressive materials other than possessed by bituminous pavements.
Types of Concrete Pavements
There are three types of concrete pavements used in the construction and they are,
· Jointed unreinforced concrete pavement
· Jointed reinforced concrete pavement
· Continuously reinforced concrete pavement
And these are explained as follows,
Jointed unreinforced concrete pavement –
They are Cost effective, reliable and so used widely for pavement construction. But they don’t possess reinforcement and has transverse joints spaced as per design. The special feature is it has dowel bars to transfer traffic loads.
Jointed reinforced concrete pavement –
They have both joints and reinforcement and are designed to withstand and hold tightly together increasing crack resistance. However, it is difficult to inspect the joint cuts where the reinforcement is discontinued. This pavement was once used in the state highways construction and it is not commonly used except by some municipalities.
Continuously reinforced concrete pavement –
These have no transverse joints but have longitudinal reinforcement thus transverse reinforcement is often used. The special feature of this pavement structure it allows development of cracks within an allowed space and also has the capacity to hold cracks tightly together.
